Ms. de la Fressange unquestionably has fashion knowledge, given our experience as a model and a person with the means to purchase couture. But I learned virtually nothing and was quite taken aback by the number of pages devoted exclusively to various shops in Paris. (Actually, it crossed my mind that she might get great discounts at her own favorite stores as a result of her highlighting them in her book!) And one particular dichotomy really annoyed me. She writes about faux pas with stringent admonishments and in another part says you shouldn't let anyone dictate to you, be your own person and do what you want! So what I want to do is say that we are all individuals, some of us looking younger than our years and in great shape, others of us not so much. But whatever you look like, be true to yourself and let your style reflect who you are, and you can't go wrong. People will sense your self-confidence and how your personality "matches" your clothes and you can sail through life feeling great in your own skin!
The author is Inès Marie Lætitia Églantine Isabelle de Seignard de La Fressange, aka Inès or Inès de La Fressange. You probably can guess from the name that she is of aristocratic origin. What you may not know is that many of the fashion houses of Europe are owned by old, aristocratic families. The dictum of what is fashionable, therefore, is part of a society you and I barely understand, but we see it on magazine pages, runway reports and such.The French have a reputation for being the arbiters of "chic" or fashionability that is also found on the street. This is a different fashion, something that the average Frenchwoman can aspire to. Their idea of fashion is to own several good pieces and work them with accessories to make an impression. It's interesting. It's certainly not the slashed jeans and tee shirts and boho tunic tops that prevail in the US. And...this is a five or six year old book, so it's slightly out of date. However, it's interesting for the mindset of what is French and fashionable. Some of it is eternal.The fashion silhouettes in this book haven't really changed much, but the book has shopping directories which of course, are vastly altered. Shops come and go. That limits the usefulness of much of the content--plus, we're all not going off to Paris to shop.Some of the basic advice is valid--especially on putting together a core wardrobe to go from work to evening. The photos are useful--even though this book is from 2010. The classics are still the classics. If you look at pictures of French icons of today, such as Juliette Binoche and Clémence Poésy, you will get an idea of how they employ the same advice in this book.
Talk about a book exploding with great advice and the know-how to go with it...this is the book! Great fashion/cultural/life info...I feel like I could blend into the Parisian scene with a stealth-like cunning reserved for only the most elite of catwalk models! That’s right...this book has a “je ne c’est quoi†kind of appeal that all will forever “amourâ€...(& if I spelled ANY of that correctly, it’s all due to the influence of Parisian Chic!)
Valuable tip about splitting your wardrobe budget in two! This book encourages women to give more thought to their fashion choices...a must for women in the workforce who are building their business wardrobes. Avoid suggestive clothing and choose wisely...sending the wrong message these days leaves a lasting impression that can derail your career! Good clothing should drape gracefully from your body, hold its shape well and not pill, pucker, gap or tear...that's why it's important to invest in quality pieces. Great book!
Disappointingly small compared to the 2013 weekly planner. It is so small as to be worthless. Ines has lost me as a future customer. The measurements are 7-1/4" by 4-1/4". The 2013 planner was 8-1/4" by 5-1/4". The 2013 planner was the perfect size and pleasant to use, which is why I ordered the 2014 planner. I've loaded a photo showing the difference in size as well as the difference in the pages layout.
